Machine Tags

Flickr has announced support for namespace-predicate-value-tags which they call Machine Tags, possibly giving new momentum to the real-world use of advanced tagging. Example:

When a user tags an event with an upcoming ID (for example : “upcoming:event=81334”) we display a link back to the upcoming.org site.

Sounds familiar? Right, it's how attribution links get generated in my Quicklinks sidebar since quite a while, namespaces left out for simplicity: for special tags, there are special rendering instructions included in the display funtion. In a chat with Rainer Wasserfuhr he then came up with the idea to generalize this and to tag tags not only with simple attributes/properties, but with possibly complex behaviour and rendering rules. We did not turn this idea into code, though. Let's see how things will develop now that there are a catchy name and a big player involved.
