News Roundup: Movable Type, RSS, DOM Magic, Cygwin and Adobe
MOVABLE TYPE
- The Trott's Trackback Explanation - A Beginner's Guide to TrackBack is very good reading, including current and possible future applications and a QuickTime movie about using TrackBack via the bookmarklet.
- Scott Andrew added some Search Link Shortcuts to his MT edit entry form. And in not so new MT news, MTAmazon evolved into a feature monster of impressive magnitude.
CONTENT SYNDICATION
- RSS.NET has a RSS Version Comparison Table identifying key differences between RSS versions.
DOM MAGIC
- WebFX presents Dynamic Table Sorting using DOM. I am not the biggest fan of DOM/DHTML stuff, but this seems to be a very good application, way superior to doing it on the server side. Find more DOM magic like DOM/CSS Tabs supporting Persistence in the articles - widgets menu. Via Scott Andrew.
- Simon Wilson translated Sam Ruby's spell checking feature into PHP and added a DOM frontend, and the Spell Checker Demo is a fine proof of concept (English only, use Mozilla as it can break in IE, read the blog entry comments). This might be something for your next homebrew blogging tool or web application.
BETTER WINDOWS
- unixreview.com: Improving the Windows experience with Cygwin - Now that Cygwin comes with mature X support, I finally have to try it out. It's not just that you can run GNU tools and scripts under Windows. Using X, you can connect to your Linux system using ssh with X forwarding and run any X application - no need to use VNC to remote control Linux boxes from Windows any more.
IN OTHER NEWS
- Apple won't be very happy to read Adobe's Great Render Race. On a page conveniently titled pcpreferred.html, Adobe presents some colorful video rendering time bar graphs and concludes :"The PC outperformed the similar Macintosh machine, at an impressive rate." Nothing that new, but now it's an offical Adobe statement.
